Listen: Dr. Thomas Schmidt on Partial Breast Irradiation

Dr. Thomas Schmidt

Beating breast cancer doesn’t necessarily have to mean losing the breast to mastectomy. Advances in breast cancer care have made it easier for doctors to target the tumor area with partial irradiation, eliminating cancer from the tumor area while preserving the rest of the breast.

At St.Vincent, this is achieved by using the SAVI catheter — a state-of-the-art tool that not only provides extremely targeted breast irradiation, but is also capable of compressing six weeks of radiation treatment into just five days for some patients.

In this brief podcast, Dr. Thomas Schmidt of St.Vincent Cancer Care explains how the SAVI catheter works, and why it’s fast becoming the preferred way to treat qualified patients.
